Dual Mass Flywheels at a glance
LuK was the pioneer in developing the dual mass flywheel (DMF) for series production.
When LuK launched the DMF back in the 1980’s it was an important technology improvement on the market. Whilst flywheels helped to eliminate the cyclic irregularities of the engine, low torque or idle speeds were still causing shaking and rattling.
LuK found that the one solution to this problem was to increase the transmissions moment of inertia without increasing the weight. The DMF is positioned between the engine and the transmission to neutralize vibration. Thus meeting the demands for smooth running, driving comfort and fuel efficiency.
The DMF was initially engineered for high-end cars, and is now used in a wide range of cars. In fact, today, every second new car or light commercial vehicle is fitted with a DMF. DMF’s are fitted as original equipment to vehicles ranging from Audi, BMW, Ford, Holden, Honda, Hyundai, KIA, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota to Volkswagen, Volvo and more.
